AUSTIN — A bill named after a Lubbock firefighter, aimed at improving long-term workers' compensation benefits for first responders across the state suffering serious line-of-duty injuries, unanimously passed the Texas Senate Wednesday and will head to the governor's desk for a signature. H.B. 2468, the Matt Dawson Act, was introduced in February and will amend the labor code to extend lifetime workers' compensation benefits to first responders who, while on the job, sustain "a serious bodily injury … that permanently prevents the employee from performing any gainful work.
